JD Ross Energy are seeking a Principal Protection Engineer for our client in ACT, a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the performance, design, and strategy for protection and zone metering assets across their sub-transmission and distribution network.
 
This role plays a critical part in aligning asset performance with long-term strategic objectives, leading a specialist team, and providing technical authority across protection systems and NEM metering assets at zone substations.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the Protection Engineering team and support the professional development of staff.
  • Develop and maintain long-term asset plans, budgets, and strategies for protection and zone metering systems.
  • Define and manage the delivery of annual programs of work for maintenance, replacement, and upgrades.
  • Deliver high-quality technical documentation- designs, test plans, maintenance programs, risk assessments, and protection studies.
  • Perform condition assessments and risk-based analysis to guide investment decisions and ensure network reliability.
  • Ensure technical compliance in protection systems for new substations, replacements, and embedded generation projects.
  • Manage contractors and regulatory obligations related to NEM metering systems.
  • Provide technical support to project delivery teams and oversee complex system incident investigations.
  • Stay across industry developments and contribute to evolving protection and metering strategies.
About You:
  • Degree qualifications in Electrical or Systems Engineering.
  • Extensive experience in protection engineering within a power utility or network environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of zone substation protection systems and NEM metering frameworks.
  • Experience developing asset strategies, conducting risk assessments, and managing multi-year capital/maintenance programs.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and mentoring engineers.
  • Confident working across standards, regulatory compliance, and configuration/data management practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical and project management capabilities.
