The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading and overseeing all engineering activities across a portfolio of renewable energy projects from early-stage development through construction and operational phases.
The role combines technical leadership with team management responsibility, ensuring the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions, effective resource allocation, process optimisation, and adherence to project timelines. The successful candidate will also provide strategic oversight of grid connection and interconnection activities across the project portfolio.
This position can be based in one of several office locations within Germany and follows a hybrid working model.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Department ManagementLead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team.Drive a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence.Establish and maintain engineering standards, processes, and quality assurance procedures.Prioritise workloads, allocate resources effectively, and ensure projects are delivered on schedule.Develop and implement tools, methodologies, and best practices to improve efficiency and decision-making.Collaborate with internal stakeholders across development, project delivery, procurement, and operations teams.Represent the organisation at industry events, conferences, and technical forums to maintain awareness of industry developments and emerging technologies.
EngineeringOversee technical support for projects throughout the development lifecycle.Ensure engineering solutions meet industry standards, operational requirements, and long-term performance objectives.Support project development teams in designing technically robust and competitive renewable energy projects.Provide technical input for supplier selection, contract negotiations, technical evaluations, and procurement processes.Support construction and project delivery teams during contractor selection, contract execution, and site implementation.Provide technical guidance for operational assets, including troubleshooting and optimisation activities.Coordinate and manage relationships with external consultants, engineering partners, and specialist service providers.
Grid Connection & Interconnection
Develop and execute interconnection strategies for utility-scale renewable energy projects.Lead grid connection studies, assessments, and technical reviews.Manage relationships with transmission and distribution system operators, utilities, and relevant regulatory bodies.Support commercial and development teams in evaluating connection risks, costs, and timelines.Ensure grid connection milestones are achieved in a timely and cost-effective manner.Lead technical negotiations relating to project interconnection requirements and agreements.
Candidate Profile
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.Significant experience within the power generation, renewable energy, energy infrastructure, or utility sectors.Extensive project engineering experience across large-scale energy projects.Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams and direct reports.
Strong experience within one or more of the following areas:
Solar PV
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Onshore or Offshore Wind
Grid Infrastructure
Skills & Competencies
Strong technical knowledge across energy generation and infrastructure projects.Excellent leadership and people management capabilities.Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.Experience working within geographically distributed and cross-functional teams.Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.Commercial awareness and understanding of project development and delivery processes.Fluent German and English language skills are required.
